Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken candidly about the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to the Catalan club, more than three years after the Argentine legend’s emotional departure in 2021.
In an interview with the Spanish network 3Cat, Laporta admitted that the relationship between Messi and the club suffered following the contract renewal saga in 2021, but said both sides have since rebuilt mutual respect.
“We had a very good relationship with Messi, but when we didn’t renew his contract, that relationship was damaged,” Laporta explained. “Then we managed to restore it to some extent. What we hope is that he can receive the great recognition he truly deserves.”

During the same interview, Laporta also praised Barcelona’s current head coach Hansi Flick, who took charge of the first team earlier this year.
He described Flick as “a fighter, similar to actor Russell Crowe,” adding that the German manager is “a great coach who shows deep sensitivity toward his players.”
Laporta expressed confidence that under Flick’s leadership, Barcelona is on the right track to reclaim its place among Europe’s elite.
“I love Barcelona very much, and during difficult times I always felt the need to help the club,” Laporta said. “A Barcelona president must always be honest and put the interests of the club above everything else.”
