Relationship with Messi Has “Recovered Warmth,” Says Laporta
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken candidly about the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to the Catalan club, more than three years after the Argentine legend’s emotional departure in 2021.
In an interview with the Spanish network 3Cat, Laporta admitted that the relationship between Messi and the club suffered following the contract renewal saga in 2021, but said both sides have since rebuilt mutual respect.
“We had a very good relationship with Messi, but when we didn’t renew his contract, that relationship was damaged,” Laporta explained. “Then we managed to restore it to some extent. What we hope is that he can receive the great recognition he truly deserves.”
Messi’s Exit and the End of an Era

Messi’s departure from FC Barcelona in August 2021 marked the end of one of the most iconic chapters in football history. The club, facing a severe financial crisis and La Liga salary cap restrictions, was unable to offer the six-time Ballon d’Or winner a new contract despite both parties’ desire to continue.
Following his exit, Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he played for two seasons before embarking on a new adventure in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami in 2023. His move to the United States was seen as a fresh start both professionally and personally.
A Symbolic Return to Camp Nou?

In Spain, speculation has grown about a symbolic return for Messi to Barcelona, possibly through a farewell or tribute match once the ongoing Camp Nou renovation project is completed.
Such an event would serve as a fitting tribute to Messi’s legendary career, during which he became Barcelona’s all-time top scorer, won 10 La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions Leagues, and secured seven Ballon d’Ors while wearing the famous Blaugrana shirt.
Laporta hinted that the club remains open to the idea of celebrating Messi’s legacy in a way worthy of his contribution to Barcelona’s history. “He deserves the greatest recognition possible,” Laporta added.
Laporta Praises Hansi Flick’s Impact
During the same interview, Laporta also praised Barcelona’s current head coach Hansi Flick, who took charge of the first team earlier this year.
He described Flick as “a fighter, similar to actor Russell Crowe,” adding that the German manager is “a great coach who shows deep sensitivity toward his players.”
Laporta expressed confidence that under Flick’s leadership, Barcelona is on the right track to reclaim its place among Europe’s elite.
“I love Barcelona very much, and during difficult times I always felt the need to help the club,” Laporta said. “A Barcelona president must always be honest and put the interests of the club above everything else.”
Looking Ahead: Respect, Legacy, and Renewal
As Barcelona continues its transition under a new era of management and a younger squad, Laporta’s remarks suggest that Messi’s story with Barcelona may not be over — even if it takes the form of an honorary return rather than a competitive one.
Fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the day when Lionel Messi once again steps foot at Camp Nou, this time to receive the applause and recognition that his extraordinary journey deserves.
