On Tuesday, about 35 protesters staged a peaceful demonstration in a Microsoft plaza and left when asked by security. But Wednesday’s action escalated. Demonstrators splattered red paint resembling blood across Microsoft’s iconic sign and refused to leave the premises when ordered by police.
According to Redmond Police Department spokesperson Jill Green, protesters “resisted and became aggressive” after being warned they were trespassing. Officers arrested 18 individuals on charges including trespassing, resisting arrest, malicious mischief, and obstruction. It remains unclear how many of those detained were Microsoft employees.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident, though tensions between protesters and law enforcement were evident.

Microsoft Azure cloud services were allegedly used to transcribe and translate intercepted calls and process surveillance data, information that could then be integrated with AI targeting systems.

However, critics point out that Microsoft did not release the findings of that review or disclose who conducted it, fueling concerns about accountability.

This is not the first time Microsoft employees have raised alarms about the company’s military contracts. Earlier in 2024, Microsoft fired employees who disrupted CEO Satya Nadella’s speech and the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in protest.
