Netflix Explores Runway AI Video Tools in Production
Netflix is reportedly testing advanced AI video tools from Runway for its content creation process. These tools could soon play a role in Netflix’s future productions. According to a Bloomberg report, Netflix is currently experimenting with Runway’s AI to see if it fits into its production workflow.
The Netflix AI video tools being tested may help reduce visual effects (VFX) costs. However, it’s still unclear if the platform will use them for entire scenes or mainly for post-production tasks. The company hasn’t confirmed the full scope of its testing yet.
Hollywood Studios Slowly Embrace AI
Besides Netflix, Walt Disney is also said to be testing Runway’s video technology. However, Disney is not planning to integrate the tools into its production pipeline yet. The report suggests the discussions are still at an early stage.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently mentioned that AI-generated video was used in the show The Eternaut. While Runway wasn’t the AI provider for that project, the move shows Netflix’s growing interest in this space. These AI tools are seen as both time-saving and cost-effective compared to traditional VFX.
Mixed Reactions from the Industry
While tech-driven filmmaking is gaining attention, it also faces criticism. Many actors and writers are pushing back against the use of AI in storytelling. The Writers Guild of America has previously called for legal action against studios using members’ work to train AI.
Still, the testing of Netflix AI video tools highlights the company’s push toward innovation. As more studios explore similar tools, Hollywood’s production methods may shift dramatically in the coming years.
