Surgeon Banned by Private Firm Still Treating NHS Patients

Surgeon Marc Lamah

A surgeon banned by private firm Nuffield Health continues to operate within the NHS, despite serious patient safety concerns. Marc Lamah, a colorectal surgeon, is no longer allowed to work in Nuffield hospitals after an investigation revealed his conduct did not meet required medical standards. However, he remains active at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

Nuffield Health withdrew his practicing rights after internal data showed one in three patients experienced moderate harm under his care, much higher than the expected 5%. Despite this, the NHS trust claims his surgical outcomes fall within the national average. The trust maintains that independent audits revealed no technical issues related to patient safety.

Patients Report Ongoing Suffering After NHS Operations

Sheryl Hunter

Sheryl Hunter, one of Lamah’s former NHS patients, described enduring five years of intense pain after a surgery he performed. She says her intestines were reconnected incorrectly, causing a bowel twist that nearly cost her life. After repeated pleas from her GP for a follow-up, Lamah failed to respond promptly. Eventually, she was seen by another consultant, who diagnosed the surgical issue.

Ms. Hunter now faces further surgeries, including pelvic reconstruction. She has shared her experience with Sussex Police, who are investigating over 200 potential cases of medical negligence within the trust.

Oversight Questions Grow as NHS Trust Faces Scrutiny

The surgeon banned by private firm continues to raise concerns among former colleagues and patients. Many believe he should not be allowed to operate on NHS patients. Despite this, the trust asserts it has robust review systems in place, including expert evaluations and regular audits.

Chief Medical Officer Prof Katie Urch emphasized their dedication to high standards of care, while acknowledging that some outcomes may fall short. As Operation Bramber investigates historical negligence claims, public pressure is growing for stricter oversight of NHS surgeons with prior disciplinary actions.
