RFK Jr Cancels mRNA Vaccine Projects
Health Secretary RFK Jr mRNA vaccine funding cut, ending $500 million in support for vaccine development against viruses like Covid-19.
This decision affects 22 projects led by major pharmaceutical firms, including Pfizer and Moderna, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed.
RFK Jr, known for his vaccine skepticism, cited safety concerns as the reason for withdrawing support.
He claimed mRNA vaccines “fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections” such as Covid and the flu.
Safety Concerns Cited, Experts Disagree
Kennedy stated that his team “reviewed the science” and is shifting toward what he called “safer, broader vaccine platforms.”
He argued mRNA technology may “prolong pandemics” by encouraging virus mutations.
However, medical experts strongly disagree. Dr. Paul Offit emphasized that mRNA vaccine funding cut decisions overlook the proven safety and fast adaptability of mRNA platforms.
He noted that flu viruses mutate with or without vaccines, and mRNA vaccines remain vital for quick responses in future outbreaks.
Impact on Pandemic Preparedness
Peter Lurie, former FDA official, said this move is a step backward. “We’re turning away from a vital tool,” he warned.
BARDA, the agency overseeing vaccine development, will now focus on platforms with a longer safety track record.
Despite Kennedy’s claims, experts stress mRNA vaccines were key to saving lives during the pandemic.
Removing funding could delay the US response to future health emergencies.
Since taking office, Kennedy has reshaped vaccine policy, including firing top immunization advisors and altering CDC recommendations for Covid-19 vaccines.
