Supreme Court Clears Way for Historic Sydney Protest

A Sydney pro-Palestinian march went ahead Sunday after the Supreme Court gave last-minute approval.
The protest was initially blocked over safety and traffic concerns, but the court overturned that decision just a day earlier.

Thousands braved heavy rain to march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, calling for peace and an end to the Gaza conflict.
Organisers named it the “March for Humanity” and hailed the legal win as a “historic” move for protest rights in Australia.

Massive Turnout Despite Weather and Police Presence

Families with children, activists, and notable figures filled the bridge, holding signs demanding an immediate ceasefire.
The crowd chanted, “Shame shame Israel, shame shame USA” and “Ceasefire now,” as police monitored the route closely.

Julian Assange, MP Ed Husic, and ex-premier Bob Carr were seen at the rally. Riot squad officers stood by peacefully.
“We could be doing more,” said Alec Beville, who attended with his three-year-old son Frankie on his shoulders.

Zara Williams, holding her baby in a sling, said Australia must act against what she called “forced starvation” in Gaza.

Police had initially refused the application, citing safety issues and lack of planning time.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said protests of this size risk public order if unplanned.

But Justice Belinda Rigg ruled that public safety wouldn’t improve with a ban.
She ordered the bridge closed to vehicles to allow the peaceful march to proceed legally.

The final-hour approval gave protesters protection under public assembly laws, avoiding charges for blocking roads.
However, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies expressed disappointment over the court’s decision.

The protest comes as global calls grow for countries like Australia to recognise Palestine.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia won’t act without firm conditions that guarantee lasting peace.
