Tinubu Rewards Super Falcons After WAFCON Victory
Nigeria’s victorious women footballers have received national recognition and major rewards following their latest WAFCON success.
President Bola Tinubu hosted the Super Falcons at Aso Rock after their dramatic 3-2 win against Morocco on Saturday.
He praised their performance and announced each squad member will receive $100,000 and a three-bedroom home.
The 24-player team celebrated with cheers as the president delivered the announcement during the reception on Monday.
Tinubu described their win as a triumph of “courage and consistency,” admitting he almost couldn’t watch due to nerves.
Historic Win Sparks National Pride and Honors
Upon arriving in Abuja, the team received a hero’s welcome. Traditional dancers, government officials, and media gathered at the airport.
The squad was then escorted in a convoy to the presidential villa.
There, Tinubu conferred national honors, the Officer of the Order of the Niger, to all players and staff.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade said the win was for “every young girl who dares to dream.”
She expressed hope for stronger support so the Super Falcons can become the world’s best team.
The president agreed, calling the victory a historic sporting milestone for Nigeria.
Promises Come Amid Past Pay Controversies
Though the rewards are generous, past unfulfilled promises have left players cautious.
Both men’s and women’s teams have faced delayed payments and broken government pledges.
Only recently did the Super Eagles receive the homes promised in 1994.
The Super Falcons have staged protests over unpaid dues after major tournaments, including the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Fans have demanded equal pay with the men’s team, as disparities persist.
Before Saturday’s final, Tinubu approved pending match bonuses and allowances.
He promised timely payments would now become standard going forward.
This time, Nigeria’s victorious women footballers hope the rewards finally match the glory they’ve earned.
