Violence Erupts at Thailand-Cambodia Border

Thailand and Cambodia border clashes turned deadly this week, as fighting erupted near the disputed Ta Moan Thom Temple. Thai officials report 14 deaths, including civilians and a soldier, after Cambodian forces allegedly fired heavy weapons into Thai territory. In response, Thai F-16 fighter jets bombed Cambodian targets across the border.

The border violence began Thursday morning when Thai troops detected a Cambodian drone followed by six armed soldiers moving close. Minutes later, Cambodian forces opened fire and launched rockets into Surin province. Thailand responded with airstrikes targeting Cambodian military positions.

Amid the chaos, the Thai military sealed off the border. Health officials say more than 30 civilians and 14 soldiers have been injured. The deadly shelling forced at least 40,000 people to flee from over 80 villages.

Both Nations Blame Each Other

Tensions escalated after Thai troops were hurt by landmines, which they claim were newly planted by Cambodia. In contrast, Cambodia accuses Thailand of violating its sovereignty and starting the violence.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister has called on the UN Security Council to intervene. Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister insists peace talks will begin only if the violence stops. He denies that the conflict is spreading to other provinces.

Both nations have downgraded diplomatic ties. Thailand recalled its ambassador and expelled Cambodia’s envoy. In retaliation, Cambodia ordered Thai diplomats to leave.

Regional Reactions and Historical Roots

Malaysia and China have urged both nations to resolve the issue peacefully. ASEAN leaders expressed concern and offered to mediate.

This Thailand and Cambodia border clashes conflict has deep historical roots. Disputes over colonial-era borders have caused tension for decades. The area has seen sporadic violence, most recently in May when a Cambodian soldier died.
