In London’s Parliament Square, 55 people were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000. They were holding signs that read: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” Additional arrests took place during a separate march in the capital. Police confirm eight more were there, with another eight arrest in Truro, Cornwall.

Across the country, similar scenes unfolded. Police detained 18 protesters in Manchester and 17 in Bristol. In Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, more supporters into custody during peaceful rallies.

Protests Challenge Controversial Ban

The rallies were organized by a campaign group called Defend Our Juries. The group declared its intent to “defy” the ban imposed on Palestine Action. Since the ban came into force on July 5, expressing public support for the group has become a criminal act.

The UK government used the Terrorism Act 2000 to enforce the ban, following a high-profile break-in at a military base. Palestine Action claimed responsibility for the act, which involved spraying red paint on aircraft, causing damage worth £7 million. Four people remain in custody over the incident.

Critics Say Move Threatens Free Speech

Palestine Action has condemned the government’s actions, calling the ban a direct attack on free speech. Under current law, supporting or belonging to the group could result in up to 14 years in prison.

As UK arrests Palestine Action supporters, civil rights advocates warn of increasing limits on lawful protest and public dissent in the country.
